Somebody cleaned up on this 1909/8 St. Gaudens!

Browsing the Heritage auction. I like to look at gold coins I can't afford image and found this.

Lot 2087, NGC MS66 1909/8 Double Eagle

Pretty coin but scrutinize the Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions info. Check out Auction 394, Lot 3597 This coin was graded NGC MS66 and sold for $51,750 on January 4, 2006. Click on the image so it enlarges and note: nick on Liberty's left arm at the elbow (holding the olive branch), the apparent die crack between "L" and "I" in LIBERTY, and the nick in the ray directly above the first "9" in the date. Skip over to the reverse and note the spot on the ray about the "R" in TRUST.

Now return to the first page and back to the Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions info. This time check out Auction 404, Lot 4580 This coin was graded PCGS MS66 and sold for $103,500 on April 29, 2006 (not four months later).

Holy Toledo!image

I know that the market pays higher for PCGS plastic than for NGC plastic but somebody hit a home run with this cross-over! Surely they'd have earned a "You Suck" for that score!

Seems strange that the second price is exactly twice the first...

Edited: to add the last sentence.
